Located close to the Ethiopian border and covering 22,800 square kilometers, Boma National Park was established in 1986, three years after the outbreak of the civil war which later raged on for 21 years.
It’s home to white-eared kob, Tiang and the Mongalla Gazelle, Common eland, African buffalo, African elephant, lions, Hyenas, leopard, giraffe, plains zebra, oryx, hartebeest, and cheetah. It’s the ideal place for bird and game viewing too.
In June 2024 the President of South Sudan revealed to the world that, his country now host the largest land mammal population in the world, about 6 million.
In the months of November to December and March to April each year, the largest land mammal migration happens that is made up white-eared kob, Tiang, and Mongalla Gazelle. The migration which is now know as GREAT WHITE NILE MIGRATION happens in the areas of Boma National Park, Bandingilo National Park, Jonglei Landscape and Sudd Swamp.
